jook and jive

i made some jook (boiled rice porridge) because i wasn't feeling well after drinking three vodka tonics on a somewhat empty stomach. this is basically the only thing i can eat when i'm not feeling well.

what i had for breakfast

i made this blackbean soup for breakfast. it's really rich, delicious, and the easiest thing to make. you saute a chopped onion and a clove or two of garlic in some butter or olive oil. add salt. add a can of black beans. puree and add sour cream. nom.

what i ate for dinner

ghetto bento dinner. it didn't taste that good either.

what i ate for brunch

so food blogs are basically porn, right ? they're gorgeous pictures of sumptuous food that are sexy and glistening. actually, there was an excellent article in harper's about the phenomenon of gastroporn a long time ago.  anyway, if there's really high-end well done food porn, there also needs be the really crappy bargain-basement variety. the DIY, bad flash photography, lo-res web cammy kind. that's the void that i'm trying to fill.

what i ate for lunch

soba noodles in dashi broth with onions, garlic, and spinach. the noodles were kind of mushy, but whatever. i ate it with a fried chicken filet bc i like fried chicken. the worst thing about making this was having lots of dishes to do. i haven't done them yet.

piece of snow

this picture didn't really come out how i wanted it to, but i kind of like it anyway bc the lighting is nice. i was going more for the sparkly effect of the snow in the sunlight like that photo of the glass of coke on a tray by a window airplane by someone famous that i really like. what was his name ?

what i had for breakfast

still life with ipod and butternut squash soup with homemade croutons. i feel weird typing about stuff i cooked. like "homemade croutons"—i mean, seriously, who cares? i guess i do bc i am actually bothering to put this stuff up. it's just so i don't feel like it was a total waste of 2 hours labor. i put in too much garlic and heavy cream. besides that it was ok. i've been eating it forever though.

what i baked for work

so this muffin was actually delicious. i don't really know how to bake anything, but i can read, so following a recipe is not so hard. these things involve ginger and pears so it's hard to go wrong. i'm planning on baking these and taking them to the cafe near my house so i can try to make some money. they look pretty on the plate, too.

singaporean sludge

here's a picture of this laksa noodle sludge i made a while ago. i had a recipe for singaporean laksa that looked really good, and i happened to have shrimp and coconut milk so i figured i'd try to make it. i decided to completely ignore the recipe bc that's just what i do— it was too complicated and it's way more fun to improvise, anyway. it wasn't that bad looking until i added the thai rice sticks and it became a disgusting sludge. i made myself eat some of it as punishment.

oscar is a seal

this is oscar. he is a dog. he's waiting for permission to pounce on booda, his lobotomized hippo. i like oscar—he's cute. like really cute. like in a omg, i'm going to lose my mind and i love you forever kind of way. yeah.

all things moooooo

this is moo ooh neng chae and moo ooh gook. say it with me. moo-ooh. which is daikon. above is a shredded daikon side dish with ginger, rice vinegar, sugar, salt, and a dash of hot pepper that's served cold. below is daikon soup. it wasn't bad, not really good either. i think my mom told me it's usually made with beef stock, but obviously i just used dashi. mur.
